Canada's River Heritage

Edited By: John Marsh, Bruce W.Hodgins, Erik R. Hanson

Frost Centre for Canadian Studies & Heritage Development

CANADA IS WORLD FAMOUS for its rivers and lakes. This reflects their great number and size, but also their variety. The country's rivers are known for their wilderness, history, natural resources, hydro-electric power, navigation and recreation. Think of the Nahanni, Ottawa, Fraser, Columbia, St. Lawrence and Niagara. Think too of the smaller, but distinctive rivers from the Soper on Baffin Island to the Grand in southern Ontario, from the Alsek in Yukon to the Bay du Nord of Newfoundland.
Given this rich river heritage, rich in natural and cultural values, Canada has acted to recognize and protect a selection of rivers in a Canadian Heritage Rivers Board, and Parks Canada provides a secretariat.
